Re-Reading a Classic

As you may recall I enjoy using the summer to reflect and prepare for the upcoming school year. In fact, I always begin by reading this book by Michael Linsin. It's been a huge help to me having the simplicity and confidence of the techniques paired with a system to administer rewards and consequences for classes of elementary students. Some of the take-aways you may be interested in include:
  • Always begin a direction with "in a moment we will"
  • When starting the year, it's best to scaffold the level of difficulty for each procedure. Start with standing and sitting and work your way up to transitioning spaces
  • When entering and exiting a classroom, students should have a physical component to focus and cool off
  • Remember to let them see who your are when you are comfortable and social. This is not the same as becoming their friends. Make sure to distinguish between the two
